St Albans received a trouncing from the 1st Scots. Guards in their F.A.Amateur Cup Tie on Saturday, losing by no less a margin than eight goals to one. A crowd of about a thousand gathered at Clarence Park(1) to see the match, which was played in ideal weather condition, except for the spectators, who found the breeze uncomfortably cool. The City had placed Hilliard, of the Abbey, at inside left in preference to Day. Faux,(2) the St Saviours player, was at centre in Habbijam’s place, while I.G.Sharpe was on the extreme left. Thus the City again had a different team. The Guards won the toss and gained a considerable advantage thereby, having the assistance of a strong wind and the sun and slope in their favour. When it came to the City’s turn to kick down, the wind and sun had practically gone. The game was not, at any point, of an exciting nature, the City giving but a poor display. The Guards were far and away the superior side.
