Match report

Webb Richardson.
St Albans City went beyond expectations in the replayed Herts Charity Cup-tie at Apsley. The results of the two previous encounters with the paper-makers did not give Albanians great hope of victory and that the City men should go so far as to win by three clear goals came as an agreeable surprise to many. Had the City lost this time they would have had to admit themselves second best, that is why victory was so welcome.
For the first time, the City were able to play their strongest team. Apsley also had their strongest eleven out and Apsley at home on a soaking wet day is a team that wants some beating. Apsley were very strong in defence but their forwards were weak in their final efforts. On the other hand the City quintette was very smart, Richardson and Walker pre-eminently so. Surely these two will soon find a place in a county team(1). The way in which the City tacked themselves on to every opportunity made their victory deserved, but whether they were a full three goals better than their opponents is another thing.
During the match Squires, who was playing a sterling game, was struck in the face by Hitchcock, the Apsley right back, and his conduct in not retaliating but keeping cool, was much to be admired. Hitchcock was promptly ordered off.

In the next round of the cup the City meet Ware. The tie is fixed for Saturday next but, as the City have to face Tufnell Park in the second round of the F.A.Amateur Cup on that day, the fixture will have to be postponed. A large crowd is expected to be around the chains at Clarence Park to see the fight and it is to be hoped that this will be so, for the City have refused a tempting offer from Tufnell Park to play the match away. Although the City Club could do well with the £7 10s with which they were tempted as a minimum, the committee considered the splendid band of enthusiasts that the club has got and decided to play at home.

The supporters who attend need not now fear wet feet, for the Corporation Parks Committee has shown a kindly consideration and provided foot-racks.

The qualities of Webb Richardson and Cecil Sharpe were spotted by others than locals in the Barnet matches. Directors of Tottenham Hotspurs(sic) were spectators of the matches and as a result both Richardson and Sharpe have been offered trials with the Spurs.
