Match report
The meeting of St Albans City and Barnet Alston on Saturday produced one of the greatest games that have ever been seen on that enclosure. The brilliant weather and the splendid condition of the turf was all conducive to good football and the play was extremely fast. A large crowd was present.
The result was due rather to the grand display of the City defence and their superiority over the Barnet forwards than to anything else. The forwards were irrepressible and with a little luck would have scored half-a-dozen goals in the first hour. At the end of that period the City had shot their bolt, but owing to the brilliance of the home backs, the Alston could not reduce the lead. The game was fought out in splendid, sportsmanlike fashion from start to finish.

The 2,200 odd spectators who witnessed the match paid £33 2s. At the gates which, when £7 2s. had been deducted for expenses, left the fine sum of £26 for the Charity Fund. The amount was a record for a Herts Charity tie and the Council have decided to present gold medals to the winners and silver medals to the runners-up, as a practical proof of their appreciation of what the St Albans and Barnet players have done for charity.

This was George Butcher’s final appearance for the City. He had made his first team debut for West Ham United at Watford on Wednesday 2nd March and signed professional forms soon after. He was just eighteen years old.
