“BARNET ALSTON FORTUNATE”

This game at St Albans on Saturday was disappointing in more senses than one. In the first place the home team suffered an unlucky defeat after having a little more than their share of the game and in the second, the game was not such a keen one as might have been expected ; in the second half the football was unworthy of the teams. In fine weather there was a crowd numbering 2,000 and in consequence the Hertfordshire charities will benefit materially and the game was played on a pitch that had been brought to astonishingly fine condition considering the recent weather.
The Mayor of St Albans(Councillor E.Dunham) kicked off in lusty fashion and after the match Sir E.H.Carlile, M.P., presented the Cup. The City were able to play their chosen eleven, but the Barnetonians were without Purvis and McGhee and at half-time, with the scores level, the City appeared to have the game well in hand, but they failed to play up to their usual second-half form and Barnet, putting on a rather fortunate goal, gained the honours. Throughout there was not much to choose between the teams, who are each former holders of the trophy, and Barnet are to be congratulated on their success on foreign soil.
Mr.C.S.Bayliss, the appointed referee, failing to put in an appearance, Mr.W.W.Dyer, who was appointed as linesman, took charge of the whistle.
