After recording their second successive league draw with a 1-1 home result against Kingstonian on the Saturday, The Ducks had their total unbeaten run of 4 games in all competitions ended as Trevor Gould's side put in a poor performance to crash out of the Isthmian League Cup in a scrappy and dull encounter at Clarence Park. City took the lead in the 67th minute when the best move of the entire game saw City (and future Ducks) keeper Paul O'Reilly's long throw out find Rob Smale on the halfway line who ran down the left before squaring to future Duck Gary Kimble whose pass found Lance Pedlar, the City striker allowed the ball to run and as the Ducks defence kindly parted for him, he struck a low shot from 14 yards past exposed United keeper Mark Pearson (making his United debut as stand-in for the injured Tim Garner). It was 2-0 in the 87th minute when Kimble crossed from the left and as the Ducks defence went AWOL, Smale stooped at the near post to plant his header past Pearson to send City through.
