Altrincham Football Club has a proud history, which includes knocking more League sides out of the FA Cup than any other curent non-league side. (For details see below). They have also been founder members of the Cheshire County, Northern Premier and the Alliance/Conference leagues as well as Conference (Nationwide) North.

Nicknamed 'The Robins', Altrincham finished 2005-06 in 18th place in the Conference National, having regained their place at their level the previous season when they won the Conference North/South play-off final against Eastbourne Borough. But, following Accrington Stanley's failure to get international clerance for James Robinson, Altrincham were docked 18 points and fined £1,000 when they subsequently took the player from Stanley and played him in the Conference. An utterly fruitless appeal to the FA confirmed Altrincham's punishment, which was all the more unbelievable in light of the fact that Accrington's only punishment was a £200 fine. So, Altrincham looked to be starting 2006-07 back in Conference North, only for Scarborough's financial problems to prompt the Conference to demote them and thereby save Altrincham's Conference National status.

Altrincham were ever-present in the National Conference from 1979 until 1997 and, prior to last year, had already regained this status once, for 1999-2000. However, they were relegated back to the UniBond in May 2000, albeit with the lowest number of defeats of any side ever demoted from the Conference and despite achieving the second-longest undefeated run of any side that season of 14 matches.
