Tufnell Park 4 St. Albans City 0
Saturday 17th January 1942
Claremont Road
Although having much the better of the play territorially, St. Albans City lost their Herts and Middlesex League match with Tufnell Park by four goals to nil at Cricklewood on Saturday. E. Cook re-appeared for the Citizens, who were without Kirkham, Saunders and Richardson, but included A. Hall, formerly of Camp Old Boys, at outside-right, and three members of the Handley Page Club - D. B. Marshall, H. Pawley and A. Jenkins - as inside-forwards.
Ground conditions were bad and ball control difficult. A. Hall missed an early chance in the Citizens' first attack and Tufnell Park, taking advantage of a mix-up in St. Albans' defence, opened the scoring after five minutes' play. The Citizens did most of the attacking until the interval, but failed to score. Pawley, Marshall and Pipe got in some good shots, but Marshall drove the ball wide while the Tufnell Park goalkeeper was on the ground after pushing out a shot from Pawley.
Tufnell Park enjoyed an interval-lead of a goal to nil, and for thirty minutes of the second half St. Albans pressed hard, without result, although Cook joined the forwards. It was this wandering on his part which led to Tufnell Park increasing their lead in a breakaway. The ball was swung out to the left wing and, with defenders out of position, Powell was helpless. During the last ten minutes Tufnell Park's young side, which is improving with experience, took the offensive and obtained two more goals.
Powell had no chance with the shots that scored; L. Hall played another good game and Jenkins was the best of the Citizens' forwards.
