Owing to the large number of outstanding engagements St Albans City had a mid week match last week. They entertained Leavesden Asylum at Clarence Park on Thursday evening in the County League and, although their team was rather a scratch one, they proved much the better side and more than deserved their victory of a goal to nil. The City had much more of the game in the first half than their opponents but at the interval there was no score. In the second half the visitors seldom crossed the half-way line and the City simply bombarded the goal, sending the ball everywhere but in the net, Eventually, Hosier headed in which was the extent of the scoring.

From the “Hemel Hempstead Gazette” 24th April 1909 :- The game had only been in progress about 15 minutes when “we” lost the services of Newberry, who was playing inside right, he accidentally receiving a severe kick which necessitated him being carried off the field. Fortunately a medical gentleman was witnessing the match and he immediately took Newberry into his charge. Everything possible was done to relieve the player till he arrived back in Leavesden. He now lies in the hospital at Watford. |
