Match report
St Albans City, the Champions of the Western Division of the Herts County League, journeyed to Welwyn on Saturday where they met the home team, the champions of the Northern Division, on the Hillside ground.
The City came away victorious by 1 goal to nil and this, considering the game, they hardly deserved to do for in the second half Welwyn had altogether the better of the play. The City forwards could not get into their usual stride; this was chiefly owing to the narrowness of the ground – it is quite five yards less in breadth than the pitch at Clarence Park – so that when the City made their long passes the ball was continually kicked into touch. Another cause for their ineffectiveness was the sound defence of Thody at back; he gave a great display all through the match.
The Welwyn defence was, with the exception of Thody and Bird, only moderate and Penn was not much troubled in goal. Of the forwards “Ranji” was the best of a dashing line.
The City forwards were not so fast as usual and Trulock shaped well on his second appearance with the senior team. The City halves and backs were safe, Davis particularly, while Kerrison was as good as ever in goal.
By winning this match St Albans City are in a very favourable position for the championship of the county, as they should have no difficulty when they meet Hertford or Ware at the Clarence Park on Saturday.
The Herts Junior Cup, which was won by Welwyn on Easter Monday, was on view in the stand on Saturday.
