Match report
In the final preliminary round of the Herts Charity Cup on Saturday St Albans City absolutely swamped Welwyn at Clarence Park, having practically the whole of the game their own way and winning by no less than 10-0. This is the biggest score the City have yet put up in one match.
Welwyn were outplayed at all points and from the beginning were a beaten team, but something must be said for the way they stuck to their guns right to the finish. They played pluckily, but their football was not in the same class as the City’s.
Welwyn were not at full strength Penn, their regular goalkeeper, and Odell, their inside right, being absent. Both Ovingdon and Paymont, who substituted, were weak but even if there had been stronger men in their places it is very doubtful whether the result would have been a bit different.
The City’s team was the strongest that has yet played. Walker was successful at outside left – certainly an improvement on Weston. With Knott at inside left and Hughes in the centre the forward cline was very strong. Price made his re-appearance in the half-back line and played one of the best games of the season.
Hughes and Knott were both very tricky, but in this line the palm again goes to Butcher. The latter, however, showed an inclination to rather overdo the solo business, too much of which does not always end in success.
The ground was in excellent condition and the air just suitable for a fast game.
