“A SEMI-FINAL FIASCO”After Saturday’s match at St Albans we give up trying to understand football form. It must seem incredible to Hitchin supporters who did not witness the game to believe that their favourites went down to the tune of 10-1. And after drawing with the same team the week before ! Little can be said in extenuation of the disaster.
St Albans were superior in every department of the game. With the exception of Dobbs, who played a grand game, Hitchin,s defence was too slow for the opposing attack. One could not help feeling sorry for Elliott; he couldn’t be blamed. When a forward is allowed to get within a few yards of goal, there is not much chance for the goalie. It will be a long time before “Billy” gets over that 10-1 “smack in the eye.”
Now Hitchin – the present holders- have no interest in the Senior Cup and they will do well to concentrate all their energies on the Charity Cup and Herts League. There should be bright hopes of obtaining both these, if they are not downhearted, as the hackneyed saying is.
Hitchin journeyed to St Albans by the 12.55, taking the Cup with them – alas, not to see it again this season. Clarence Park was splendid in glorious sunshine, although the playing pitch was a trifle heavy, after the morning’s rain.
