St Albans City met at Clarence Park on Saturday a full team of the Newportonians who, however, finished the game with but ten men(1). The home team displayed but little of their previous week’s form, although they won by four goals. The forwards, amongst whom Meagher figured at inside-left, were the weak part of the team, lacking the vim and battle necessary to beat a pair of lusty, strong-kicking backs. The most prominent man in the team was S.Hatton, whose all round form and speed rendered him a strong factor in the homesters’ defence. The visiting team as a whole played extremely well, although handicapped by an injury to the “goalie” which caused him to retire for the greater part of the game. The referee called the teams together in the following formations (listed above), with the City kicking up the slope.

1 This was City’s fifth meeting with Newportonians(all played at Clarence Park) and it was the first occasion on which their opponents were able to field the full eleven players. City had won all four previous encounters with a goal tally of twenty one to two in their favour. |
