For the third year in succession, Barnet Alston were drawn to appear at Clarence Park in a qualifying round of the “English Cup” and in view of the semi-local rivalry and the keen contests the meetings between the teams in the past have engendered, a big muster of spectators was expected. Despite the dull weather, there was an attendance of quite 2,000 who, with, of course, the exception of the Alston’s not inconsiderable following, sustained a keen disappointment in the failure of the City to stand against a team who have never before beaten them on Clarence Park. The absence of S.Hatton from the City defence, as a result of which Wiggs played at right-back and Brightman appeared in the forward line, was the only change from the advertised elevens. Purvis won the toss for Barnet and decided to attack the York Road goal. The teams lines up, punctual to time.
