This match constituted the City’s fifth Spartan League game and provided them with their fifth successive win in the competition. This was the Polytechnic’s first visit to Clarence Park and although they returned without the League points they came in search of, they played a plucky game. The City were the superior team but they failed to take advantage of their opportunities in the first half, when the Polytechnic registered two unexpected points, but the home team atoned in the second half by putting on five goals. Hosier did not turn out for the Saints as expected, with the result that Palmer re-appeared. The latter, who had apparently fully recovered from his injury, played at inside-right for the first few minutes, but eventually took his usual position, Cook going forward.
