The 2nd Coldstream Guards – photographed at Stamford Bridge in 1912.

“DRAMATIC ENDING TO A GREAT GAME”

A defeat which may mean the loss of the Spartan League Championship and yet which was quite undeserved on the run of play, was met with by St Albans City at Burton’s Court, Chelsea on Saturday, the 2nd Coldstreams winning an intensely exciting game. In fact, the soldiers secured the points with the very last kick of the match, thus bringing a brilliantly-fought game to as dramatic a climax as one may witness in a lifetime.
Although the Guards snatched the victory, a draw would have been the fitting result. Indeed, but for their ranks consisting of practically ten men during the second half, it is quite probable that the City would have retired winners and with the championship a “safe thing”. As it is, there is now every likelihood of it being decided on goal average.
With the Saints making up with extra skill what they lacked in weight, the teams were fairly well matched and with both elevens “flat out” from start to finish, the 500 or so (chiefly impartial) spectators were provided with an entertaining display.
