Defeating Tufnell Spartans on Saturday by the decisive margin of 3 goals to nil, St Albans City assured themselves of the championship of the Spartan League and for the first time the handsome cup – one of the finest trophies an amateur team can win – will find its home for a year at St Albans. With this honour in sight, the City took the field determined to win and after having much the best of a fairly good game, they were left winners by five clear goals – five of the best.
The Saints were not quite at full strength, H.G.Cook being absent injured but A.Michell, of the Reserves, who came in to fill the gap in the forward line, gave such an excellent show that no weakness was felt. Arthur Wiggs re-appeared at inside-left like a giant refreshed and was the best of the City forwards. The outstanding features in a strong defence were Grimsdell’s kicking and Brandham’s wonderful energy.
To the disappointment of old St Albans friends, T.Knott was absent from the Tufnell team, who had two smart wing men in McLaren and Cass and a good centre-forward.
