The “useless” cricket ground stand.
|
The team which represented St Albans City against Woodford Albion was weakened by the absence of T.Hearn who had to drop out on Friday owing to an injury to his knee. He was replaced by R.Jeffries, of the Reserves, who proved a satisfactory substitute, notwithstanding he was playing out of position and on a ground not at all suitable to his game. S.Hatton and G.S.Webb both had to decline the invitation to play, owing to the shortness of notice. S.D.Goodfellow was given a third trial, but he was hardly a success. Woodford gave a very good display, especially in the first half; their bustling methods came off and their opening goal was well deserved. The pace told before the end, but the home team had a great deal to thank their hard working halves – Brandham, Wiggs and Meagher – for the win. H.Smith in goal gave a really great display, two of his saves at very close quarters were delightful, and there is no doubt that Herbert is now right at the top of his form. Leslie Hosier scored two good goals, the first was a fine oblique shot, similar to the one against Tufnell Park. If both wingers tried occasionally to cut in from the line and shoot on the run goals would probably come, as the defence get used to an unexpected centre and concentrate on the goal, giving the inside forwards little chance of converting. The large number of spectators who turned up in spite of the wretched weather conditions is a cheering feature to the committee.
What an improvement, from a spectator’s point of view on wet Saturdays, if the useless stand on the far side of the cricket ground could be moved to the football enclosure.
