Another disappointment was in store for followers of St Albans City on Saturday when Chesham Generals came to Clarence Park in search of Spartan League points and succeeded in finding a couple. This they were rather fortunate in doing for they had a minor share of the play. They won because they were the only side that could score a goal. The City eleven look almost like a team of reserves. W.Flint appeared in goal, Hillier and McDonald were the backs and C.Paul and P.Staines appeared among the forwards. Grimsdell assisted Watford against Swindon(1), according to a promise to help them in emergencies because of their kindness in allowing him to train on their ground during the last four seasons(2). The City played desperately hard for a time, but after the Generals broke away and scored what proved to be the winning goal, there was not much in the game to commend it.
Reprinted from “The Herts Advertiser & St Albans Times” – 25th October 1913. 1 Swindon Town won by two goals to one. 2 Grimsdell made nine appearance for Watford in the Southern League in 1913/14. |
