St Albans City lost, but they lost gamely. A four-nil defeat was, perhaps, unexpected but there is no doubt that the team which faced Southall on Saturday is not the equal of the team which ousted the holders(Stockton) from the competition last year. Even so, the reputation of the Club is not tarnished for the team faced a better team which had a very strong record behind it. Southall are the champions of the Great Western and Suburban League and have thrice won the Middlesex County Cup in recent years. There was a very good muster of spectators in the stand and round the ropes when the teams lined up. The visitors appeared first and the City some minutes after the time for kicking off – a bad habit they have developed lately. The City were at full strength, while Southall had a reserve outside-right and their mascot, a pierrot, who might have had his influence on the subsequent proceedings. |
