“HOMESTERS DECISIVE VICTORY”The visit of the Great Western Railway to Clarence Park on Saturday was particularly interesting by reason of the fact that that was the first time they had appeared there. The team, which appeared in white. Put up a fairly good game but did not seem to be of more than average Spartan League strength. The ground was in a very hard state, the ball was lively and the players took some time to get used to the conditions. The turf was completely covered with frost and the lines had to be swept clean of it before the game could proceed. The Great Western Railway appeared with a full team but the City team had suffered many changes, particularly in the forward line. Jeffries appearing at left back in place of Grimsdell, who was playing in the English Amateur Trial(1). Hepworth remained at outside-left with Wiggs as his partner. Both Hosier and Paul were resting and H.Wilks was brought in at outside-right, Butterfield, a St.Saviours player, took the inside-right berth and H.Whitworth was given a trial at centre.
