"LEAGUE LEADERS BEATEN”At Chesham on Saturday, St Albans City put up a splendid performance when they visited Chesham Generals, the Spartan League leaders, by 1 goal to nil. The Generals had an enviable record when they went on the field, having won 14 League matches and drawn only one, with no losses. St Albans City thus have the additional satisfaction of being the first team to beat the Generals and on the latter’s own ground, too. On the General’s somewhat small pitch, which has a pronounced slope from side to side, the game was fought at cup-tie pace from start to finish and although at times there was a driving rain which made football very insecure, the football never flagged in interest. The City’s thoroughly deserved their victory and with a little more luck would have scored several goals. The unusual interest attaching to the game drew the largest crowd seen on the ground this season, among whom were a considerable number of St Albans enthusiasts, who had either travelled by train or cycled the distance. The home team fielded a team which, though it contained several changes from the previous week, was one of the strongest it has had. St Albans City made one change, J.Rainsden coming in in place of Wiggs, who was unable to play.
