“STORY OF FORWARDS WHO WERE BACKWARD” It is a sorry story that has to be told of the Spartan League match at Clarence Park on Saturday. The Great Eastern Railwaymen raided the City on their own ground and carried away both points. The homesters had something to wipe off the slate, too, for on their encounter with the Railwaymen at Romford they were defeated by 4-0. The opening stages of the game suggested that the City would succeed in avenging their previous defeat, for they pressed strongly, but the same old trouble with the forward line manifested itself again and confidence gave way to doubt and doubt to resignation as it was seen that the City were not going to register a victory. The Romford team has a redoubtable record in the Spartan League this season; Granger being a veritable giant, to beat whom it would be no mean achievement, so that City’s defeat does not imply disgrace. The sting lies simply in the fact that on the run of play the City, with more combination and reliability in front of goal on the part of the forwards might at best have secured one point, if not two. The City played C.Fearn and Field at back, while Meagher moved up into the position of centre-forward. Pierce, who gave a promising display the previous week appeared again at outside-right, with W.Paul as his inside man. |
