Two brilliant pieces of free kick trickery from Jon Sille paved the way for City’s F A Trophy preliminary round win.
After 12 minutes he blasted a fine shot directly home from 20 yards. And then on the half hour, from almost the same spot, he stunned the East Anglian Town and Country League side again. Lowestoft had expected a repeat performance but Sille sent a delicate chip into the top left hand corner of the net which sent manager Ron Duke rushing to the touchline to acclaim.
In between Sille’s two free kicks Paul Mayles got the second goal by nipping in behind a hesitant Lowestoft defence to head home.
The game went off the boil in the second half but Neil Dudman headed a fourth goal after the Lowestoft goalkeeper had saved a Dave Lennard long range shot.
“We had done enough when we had scored the three goals. But we should have done a bit more in the second half, we weren’t hungry enough” Said Duke.
And while City were somewhat lethargic after the break, their opponents were not too enthusiastic about starting the game. They arrived at Clarence Park at 2.35 and showed how ill prepared they were in the first half hour.
They seemed to have little idea how to line up a defensive wall at free kicks. And a hash of a clearance allowed Mayles to score his goal. They very nearly allowed Sille to complete a hat trick when a shot was saved at the second attempt.
But Lowestoft did get a consolation goal scored by Marshall McLean two minutes from time.
