Ray began his career at Tottenham Hotspur before signing apprenticeship forms with Wolves in 1962. After being released by Wolves at the end of the 1964/65 season Ray went on trial with Crystal Palace before signing for Romford where he scored 66 goal in four seasons. Short spells at Tamworth, Nuneaton and Notts County followed before joining Worcester. it was from WorcesterRay signed for The Saints in November 1974. Ray played 24 games scoring five goals. Left Clarence Park to join Barnet where he spent four seasons.
