St. Albans City 3 An Army XI 2

Saturday 18th April

Clarence Park

St. Albans City, who included several military players, defeated a well-balanced Army side at Clarence Park , on Saturday. The Citizens were well served by the excellent goalkeeping of Metcalfe, who caught the ball cleanly and revealed good anticipation.

After only a few minutes' play, Pipe. tricking two men, passed to Richardson, who centred, and LOWE scored with a smart header.

After this early setback, the military team attacked with greater vigour, but in front of goal they never really appeared dangerous, and it was not long afterwards that the City added a further goal. Brownbill centred to Pipe, who narrowly missed scoring, but LOWE, gathering the resulting goal-kick, put in a first-time drive, which gave High, who played well in the Army goal, no chance.

Saunders and Richardson, the City's inside forwards, were the schemers of the attacks, and Saunders' long shots were always a source of danger to High.

After the resumption, the soldiers dominated the play for long spells, and Metcalfe pulled off many saves, including two rasping shots from McLachlen.

It was during one of these attacks that the Army team were awarded a penalty-kick. DAVIES, taking the shot, gave Metcalfe no chance with a well-placed drive.

Ten minutes later Pipe, after a clever run, in which he beat two men, passed to Richardson, who put the ball across the centre to SAUNDERS who scored with a shot from long range.

Before the final whistle the Army reduced the deficit. DAVIES, receiving the ball from the opposite wing, made no mistake with a well-placed shot.

On the run of the play the Citizens, who were well served by Crossley, Saunders and Pipe, deserved their success.
